Assessments & Team Assignments
We are an "earn it" baseball program.
As our program grows and attracts players from all across San Diego, the quality of teams at every level our program improve and the competition (and results) increase accordingly. Players (new and returning) will continually be assessed on effort, attitude, commitment and performance to best determine their team assignments.
Through the Summer and into August, all committed players will be assessed with team assignments completed by Labor Day weekend. While our flexible Summer program involvement is 100% optional, the development that players make during the Summer and into the Fall program certainly can impact final team placement.
Our goal is to always have our evaluation and recruiting process working itself back toward creating great teams, both on and off the field. Our open, extended tryout process ensures that we make the best possible decisions.
We have some really good teams and sometimes it’s ok to be on the second team or third team to grow and get better and learn to be a leader.
Coaches will meet over the Thanksgiving Break and may move some players up or down based on effort, attitude, commitment and performance.
Additional Note to Parents and Players
I recognize that players and families prefer certainty. Who are my coaches? What team am I on? Both very reasonable expectations and questions. But as an organization, we prefer teaching life through baseball and earning your spot, and then being a part of a program where you can grow, develop and have no limits on how much they can develop as a player and young person. That is my commitment to our players and families.
I also commit to have competitive rosters for all our teams with strong coaching and organization. As well, players that work hard, are coachable and compete mentally (Baseball IQ) will be recognized.

Team Names / Levels
We will have 3 or 4 teams at each age level, with our top team typically being our PRIME team. If your player is one of the best players at their age in San Diego, learn more about our San Diego Hawks (Prime) teams here.
In the past, we have named teams Gold, Navy, Silver, etc. And while we typically have different level teams at each age group, we have seen many of our teams overperform their "name", and therefore, we typically default each team to the name of the head coach (e.g. Hawks 12U (Strauch)). The other reason is --- at some age levels, e.g. 12U (Turning 13U), we will have 3 teams that can compete against the other best teams in San Diego, so colors based on a tiered approach within the organization would be very misleading.
Our goal is to challenge all of our teams through competitive games and tournament play, at a level that yields maximize player development while doing this as part of a team that is a baseball family.
